RSC Level 2 Module 5: Delegation

 

Step 1) Overview: Delegation is the assignment of a specific task or project by one person to another, and the assignee’s commitment to complete the task or project.  Delegation includes accountability for completing the task and completing it in conformance with stated standards.  The topic of delegation is often subsumed under the theme of Time Management because it is an integral part of the increasing your productivity.  However, delegation is such a critical component of your success as a manager that it is worth dedicating time to learning why you need delegation, how to plan and implement delegation  and how delegation opens the door to your growth and development as a leader.  In summary, you will never have the time and space for taking on the strategic responsibilities of a leader – planning, business analysis, controlling operations, developing talent – unless you master the art of delegation.

 

Step 2) Action Learning: Please watch Video A and Video B below.

Video A is a 4-minute segment from Marshall Goldsmith, one of the top leadership consultants in the world, explaining the two key questions that are the starting point of all delegation: is this a task that could be delegated and am I, as a leader taking on responsibilities that could be delegated to someone else.  Delegation is not a uniform benefit – it is not always desirable, you have to be selective.  Use this video as a trigger for thinking about, “What are the characteristics of tasks or projects that can and should be delegated?” and “As a leader, am I inclined to do everything myself?”

 

Video B is a 5-minute segment from Rick Conlow, CEO of WCW Partners and author of 11 books.  Rick walks you through the five steps that are important for success in delegation: (1)outline the task (2)build confidence by starting with small steps (3)set up an agreed on time for check-up and coaching  (4)make sure you give the appropriate support and resources (5)at the end of the task, summarize and coach for improved performance. 

Step 3) Points to Ponder: 

1) Evaluate your current workload and your ability to manage it comfortably.  Do you often find yourself wishing you had more hours in the day?  Do you feel concerned that you are so heavily loaded with routine tasks that you rarely have the time to pause, review the overall direction you are headed in and make smart decisions that require planning, business analysis and coordination that you simply do not have the time for?

2) Describe an experience when a task or project at work was delegated to you by a superior.  Did the delegation match Rick Conlow’s 5 steps?  Evaluate the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of this delegation and describe lessons learned.

3) Evaluate the advice presented by both Marshall Goldsmith and Rick Conlow.  What are your specific strengths and weaknesses in delegation?  Any lessons learned?  How do you plan to play to your strengths and address your weaknesses?  How can Enerfab’s top management assist you in refining your delegation skills?

4) When you delegate a task or project to someone who reports to you, how would you address the questions, “What’s in it for me?” “Why don’t you do it yourself?” “Why should I do your work?”  Do such questions place a limitation on who you can delegate to?
